Quick wins (under 30 minutes total)
Do these first. They're free, fast, and compound with everything else.
- Unblock crawlers. Open
robots.txt, remove any Disallow rules for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, or Meta-ExternalAgent. - Add llms.txt. One markdown file at the root describing your site. Full guide here.
- Publish Organization schema. One JSON-LD block in your site's head. Our generator does it in 30 seconds.
- Timestamp evergreen pages. Add visible "Last updated: [date]" near the title on your 10 top pages.
Content tactics that earn citations
AI engines extract what they can verify. Your content needs to be structured for extraction and rich with verifiable facts.
Answer capsules
After every H2, put a 1-2 sentence direct answer before diving deeper. This is what gets pulled verbatim.
Statistics and dates
Generic prose loses to fact-dense writing. "It's growing" is weak. "Microsoft reported a 357% YoY increase in AI referrals, reaching 1.13 billion visits by mid-2025" is citable.
Comparison tables
If your topic involves comparing options, use an HTML table. Tables are easy for AI to parse and are the most-cited format in SaaS queries.
Authority tactics (the hard part)
The University of Toronto citation study confirmed: in most verticals, AI engines cite third-party sources over owned content. You cannot earn this overnight. You can earn it over a quarter.
- Launch a data series. Survey your customers, audit your dataset, publish quarterly reports. Publications link to unique data.
- Pitch the data. Every quarterly release should come with 5-10 media pitches. TechCrunch, Ahrefs blog, Search Engine Land, Semrush — these publications frequently get cited by AI.
- Guest post on trade sites. One well-placed contributed article on a Domain Authority 70+ site beats 10 posts on your own blog for citations.
How to prioritize
A realistic 90-day rollout for a mid-market content team:
- Week 1: All quick wins (tactics 1-4, 6-8, 19-20). Two days of focused work.
- Weeks 2-4: Content tactics (5, 9-11). Rewrite your top 10 pages with answer capsules and citations.
- Month 2: Structural work (12, 16-18). Glossary launch, speed audit, internal linking refresh.
- Month 3: Authority push (13-15). Case study, proprietary data release, first wave of media pitches.
Run an AEO scan before you start and again at the end of each month. You should see measurable improvement in your overall score and in the specific factors you prioritized.
