What is AEO?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your website content so that AI-powered answer engines — ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews — can find, understand, and cite your content when users ask questions.
Unlike traditional SEO, which focuses on ranking your page in a list of blue links, AEO focuses on making your content the actual answer. When someone asks ChatGPT "what's the best project management tool?", AEO determines whether your product gets mentioned in the response.
This matters because the way people search is fundamentally changing:
- 1.08% of all website sessions now come from AI traffic, growing ~1% monthly (Conductor, January 2026)
- Microsoft reported a 357% year-over-year spike in AI referrals by mid-2025, reaching 1.13 billion visits
- 1 in 4 Google searches now trigger an AI Overview
Why does AEO matter now?
Three forces are converging that make AEO urgent:
AI Overviews are everywhere
One in four Google searches now triggers an AI Overview. In healthcare, it's nearly one in two. Semrush's March 2025 study of 10 million keywords found 13.14% of all Google searches triggered AI Overviews — and that percentage keeps climbing.
AI visitors convert better
Research shows the average AI search visitor is 4.4x more valuable than a traditional organic search visitor based on conversion rate. These aren't casual browsers — they're people who got a recommendation from an AI and are ready to act.
Non-cited sites lose traffic
When AI Overviews appear, the #1 organic result sees 58% fewer clicks. But domains that get cited in the AI response see 35% more clicks than before. You're either in the answer or you're invisible.
What determines if AI cites your content?
A University of Toronto study from September 2025 identified the key factors. The most important finding: AI systems overwhelmingly prefer third-party authoritative sources. In consumer electronics, earned media was cited 92.1% of the time.
The GEO-16 framework (September 2025) identified three top citation predictors:
- Metadata and freshness — 95% of ChatGPT citations come from content published or updated within the last 10 months. Pages with visible timestamps get 1.8x more citations.
- Semantic HTML structure — Clear heading hierarchy, descriptive H2/H3 tags, lists, and tables.
- Structured data markup — FAQPage, HowTo, Product, and Article schema predict higher citation likelihood.
Importantly, the research found that authoritative writing style alone does not improve AI visibility. What matters is verifiable facts, cited sources, and well-structured content. Including citations and statistics can boost visibility by over 40%.
The 12 AEO factors
Based on analysis of what AI engines actually look for, there are 12 measurable factors:
| Factor | What it checks |
|---|---|
| Answer Capsules | Concise 1-2 sentence answers directly after headings |
| FAQ Schema | FAQPage structured data with real Q&A pairs |
| JSON-LD | Organization, WebPage, Article structured data |
| llms.txt | File at domain root instructing AI crawlers |
| AI Crawler Access | robots.txt allowing GPTBot, ClaudeBot, etc. |
| H2 Questions | Headings formatted as questions matching user queries |
| Meta Descriptions | 120-160 character summaries for AI previews |
| Citations | External links to authoritative sources |
| Content Structure | Proper heading hierarchy, lists, semantic HTML |
| Page Speed | Load time under 2 seconds for crawler efficiency |
| Mobile | Viewport tag and responsive design |
| Internal Linking | Navigation, breadcrumbs, contextual links |
How to start with AEO
Start by measuring where you stand. Run your site through an AEO analyzer to get scores on all 12 factors. Then prioritize fixes by impact:
Quick wins (under 30 minutes)
- Add a meta viewport tag if missing
- Create a
/llms.txtfile - Check your robots.txt isn't blocking AI crawlers
Medium effort (1-4 hours)
- Add FAQ schema to your most important pages
- Restructure headings as questions
- Add JSON-LD Organization schema
Ongoing work
- Write answer-capsule paragraphs after every heading
- Build citations to authoritative sources
- Keep content fresh — update timestamps, refresh statistics
The data is clear: AEO isn't optional anymore. With 1 in 4 searches showing AI answers and AI visitors converting 4.4x better, the sites that get cited win. The ones that don't become invisible.
