What is an answer capsule?
An answer capsule is a 1-3 sentence direct answer placed immediately after a heading, before any subheadings or supporting content. It's structured so that a single paragraph can be extracted and presented as a complete answer by an AI engine.
Think of it as the "TL;DR" for each section — but instead of tucking it at the bottom, you put it at the top, every time.
Why AI engines love them
AI answer engines don't read your whole article. They extract. When ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews pull from your page, they're looking for a coherent chunk of text that stands on its own.
A well-formed capsule is perfect extraction bait:
- It's short enough to cite in full.
- It directly answers the question in the heading.
- It doesn't depend on context from earlier in the article.
- It's labeled by a semantic H2 the crawler can parse.
Writers who add capsules to existing content typically see AI visibility improvements within 2-4 weeks — faster than almost any other on-page change.
The capsule formula
Use this three-part template for every capsule:
- Restate the question as an assertion (so the answer stands alone).
- Give the direct answer with specific facts if you have them.
- One sentence of qualifier or context to pre-empt follow-ups.

Updating your blog is important because fresh content helps with SEO and AI engines also value recency...
Strong example
How often should I update my blog?
Evergreen pages should be refreshed every 3-6 months, while news-adjacent posts need updates weekly or immediately after major events. Research from BrightEdge shows 95% of ChatGPT citations go to content updated in the last 10 months, so stale pages vanish from AI answers quickly.
Common mistakes
- Burying the answer. If your first sentence is "In this section we'll explore…" you've lost. Lead with the answer.
- Vague claims. "It's very important" is not extractable. "Pages with FAQ schema see 31% more AI citations" is.
- Depending on prior context. Don't write "As we saw above…" — the capsule must stand alone.
- Over-qualifying. "It depends" is not an answer. Give a clear default, then note the edge cases.
Retrofitting existing content
You don't need to rewrite everything. Spend 20 minutes per top-10 page adding capsules:
- Scan your H2s. Are they questions? If not, rephrase them.
- Read the first paragraph under each H2. Is it a direct answer? If not, write one.
- Paste the capsule at the top. Move the previous intro text below.
- Publish. Update the "last modified" date.
That's it. On a 15-page content library, you're looking at ~5 hours of work that can move the needle on AI citations within a month.
