AI Overviews are Google's AI-generated answer blocks that appear at the top of search results for many informational queries. Launched in May 2024 and expanded globally through 2025, they synthesize information from multiple sources into a single answer with small citation links.
As of early 2026, AI Overviews appear on roughly 25% of all Google searches and nearly 50% of healthcare queries. When they appear, the #1 organic result sees ~58% fewer clicks, while sources cited inside the overview see ~35% more clicks.
